George – A Donkey Story

GEORGE

George is a miniature donkey, who recently arrived at the sanctuary after being left homeless. His previous place of residence was a family farm, until his owners retired. Having nowhere else to go, George and ten other donkeys were relocated to the sanctuary. Up for sponsorship, the shy donkey captured our hearts.

Little did my wife and I know George had a special story. We were told he was an American donkey, whose birthday was July fourth. His name is General George Washington, in honor of his birthdate. Selecting George to sponsor was priceless, as my wife is American. After living thirty-five years in Ft. Lauderdale, the call of the north moved us home to Canada.

We plan on visiting George regularly at his home in Roseneath and this post will contain pictures of George and his brethren at the farm. Donkeys at the sanctuary will be photographed and their photos and names posted. The pictures will create a cute collection of animals who can be stubborn with a mind of their own, but are also endearing and adorable.

Winning over our new friend George will take time, but once a loving relationship develops with the donkey, we hope he will be our friend forever.

Under my name, you will find a link to a wonderful story about a donkey, Omar. Omar is based on an actual donkey I met in Mexico. It is one of my earliest stories, and still one of my favorites. It is also published in my book, A Collection of Short Stories.

Below is George, with myself and my wife.  The white donkey is Gabby – a real sweetheart!

Here are a few more residents at PrimRose. The first is Piccolo, George’s mother, followed by Clara, George’s grandmother. Next are Kentucky and Penny – all very affectionate donkeys.

After visiting with George again, here are a few more faces to add to his pals at PrimRose. It was a mild, sunny day with low humidity, perfect for being out enjoying the weather. First is Joey, resting in the sun, followed by Nicky, who had just finished eating. Tilly was also lounging around, while Victoria and Marguerite were munching on the fresh hay.

Today we brought our two grandsons to PrimRose to meet George. Here are a few of his friends who gathered near us. From left to right are: Feta Mae, Jennie, Little Dove, Molly (on the left) and Elizabeth, and finally Oscar. The boys had a great time petting and brushing the donkeys, who also seemed to enjoy the attention.

We have been to visit George a couple of times since my last post. In August, it was a beautiful day and he was enjoying munching on the grass. We learned on that visit the donkeys prefer to eat the grass in the afternoon, after the sun has dried all of the morning dew from it – who knew? Today, we also managed to get in a visit. I think George really enjoyed being brushed and I had the opportunity to get even more photos of his friends at PrimRose. First is George, followed by Christopher, Poppy, Shiloh and Cheyenne, and Zack. Next are Lily and Amelia, who are good friends regardless of their difference in size, Jenny, who is resting, and Bonnie. Finally, there is Jesse, who we were told in 49 years old and also loved being brushed.
