Chip Trucks

CHIP TRUCKS OF ONTARIO

Chip trucks dot the countryside and small towns in Southeastern Ontario, these creative food stands serving fresh cut potatoes made into French fries. Served with gravy and with a shot of malt vinegar, they are a delicious treat. Also served at these food venues is poutine, a dish invented by a French Canadian, comprised of fresh cut fries and cheese curd, topped with hot gravy, a true Canadian delicacy.

To a lesser degree, such food stands also typically serve hamburgers, onion rings, and hot dogs, among other items. However, fries are king, making up of some eighty per cent of sales. Some entrepreneurs have become wealthy serving up these roadside staples during the warm weather months.

Food trucks are meant to attract attention. Their gaudy paint jobs and gimmicky signs are often beyond reproach, as creative artists do outlandish things to attract customers to their fry trucks. Stopping by a chip truck as one travels the countryside is a Canadian tradition, providing good food in an outside setting. Virtually all such establishments boast picnic tables, some providing scenic views and the ability to observe nature. Frequently, customers will see birds, chipmunks, squirrels, and other small creatures who are attracted to handouts or carelessly discarded leftovers, an added benefit to this wonderful experience.

A visit to a chip truck usually ensures tasty food, as there is no such thing as bad fries at a chip truck, guaranteeing a return trip in your future.

WILLIAM STANLEY

After having stopped at numerous trucks this summer, I think we enjoyed the fries at Mrs. Christie’s Wrench Fries the best. Located just south of Hwy 7 on County Road 38, we have stopped here numerous times, and the chips are always delicious. Closing at the end of October, 2024 for the season, if you can’t stop in before then, put it on your list of a place to visit next year.

Special shoutout to the guys at The Bonfire (2710 Lakefield Road), just north of Peterborough. This recently opened food truck served up delicious fries today,  the men happy to show us how they cut the fresh chips. Looking forward to visiting again, as they plan to stay open year-round!
