THE WRITING STATION

It is five a.m., and the dark night sky is fading, being replaced by the morning light of a new day. Having peace and solitude when writing is very important; the quiet of the night an ideal time to test your creative writing skills. Creating an ideal environment for yourself will allow your ideas to flourish. Your writing station will be your own creation, but allow me to share my space with you.

Don’t be in a hurry to start. Fix yourself your favorite drink, whether its coffee, tea, or juice, it should be whatever you most enjoy drinking, making sure you have enough refills to last until your writing session is over.

Set up your computer. I watch at least an hour of my favorite music artists, the beautiful sound helps fuel my creative juices as I watch these gifted singers perform their magic on screen. Find whatever brings you joy and spend some time immersed in it before attempting to put words on the page.

The most important item in my writing station is a very old, silver-plated teapot, which belonged to my mother. I planted succulents in what was once her prized possession, and it is my signature piece at my writing station. Your most important sentimental object should sit close to where you write. An item which brings you peace during troubled times will allow your emotions to sync with your writing, providing a smooth sendoff for your session.

My love of flowering plants always provides a good supply of fresh cut flowers, when in season. I surround my writing station with such blossoms, which allows me to enjoy my attachment to nature. Houseplants in the winter months provide the same connection, inspiring me to incorporate my love of natural beauty in my work. Find something which brings you joy, keep it within view, and allow your connection with it to bring you inspiration.

When writing in the summer, I always open the nearest window to where I am writing and listen to the bird song at or before dawn. The beautiful melody of sound heightens my senses and brings joy and happiness to my heart.

I always set a goal for the number of words I feel capable of writing in a session. Do not be unrealistic in your expectations, which can lead to frustration. Always view your writing as a hobby, as if you create something special, it will be noticed. Attaining a career in writing and becoming a best-selling author is an achievable goal for everyone, however it is up to you to realize your dream. Reaching the plateau of success must be earned, and never is a given.

Best of luck with your writing, a skill gifted to few, but a door open to all. May your future lead to a successful career as a creative and important writer.
